Continuous production of magnesium wire by twin-roll casting

Magnesium as a lightweight material has been come to the fore since automotive and aircraft sectors ask for weight-savings in cars, airplanes and their components. Until now, the production of magnesium is not efficient regarding energy and costs. An opportunity for energy-saving production of magnesium sheets is twin-roll casting of magnesium strips and the hot rolling technology. By reducing production steps, twin-roll casting is also cost-efficient. Further products like wire, rods and bars are manufactured by extrusion which is not very efficient with regard to high quanitities and product length. A new economic processing route for magnesium wire has been developed at the Institute of Metal Forming in Freiberg. Adapting twin-roll casting, an industry-related plant will be built up and tested for magnesium wire.
