Laser and plasma surface treatment of aluminium substitutes wet-chemical processes for fiber metal laminates

Fiber metal laminates (FML) can advantageous be used for light weight and fatigue critical applications. Metal surface treatment by wet-chemical processes is a proven technology but limits the increase in FML productivity. Here new non-tank processes for surface cleaning and activation are needed. Within the presentation actual results of surface treatment by laser and plasma sources are shown. The mechanical bonding strengths using glass fiber epoxy resin bonding layers as well the corrosion behavior of the joint were tested and compared with conventional produced FMLs.
