The following paper describes research focused on the modification of water atomised, aluminium powder of developed shape. These modifications influence the powder characteristics and its behaviour while treated by the laser beam during the Selective Laser Melting (SLM) process. Aluminium powder is mixed with silica nanoparticles and heated up to temperatures higher than the aluminium melting point, which causes a selective remelting of the powder particles and results in a powder spheroidization. Powders are described using grain size distribution apparent density and changes in particles’ shape. In addition, the internal structure of the particles is investigated by using SEM. The powders are compared to market-available aluminium spherical powders. The influence of the powder behaviour on the SLM processing is tested by printing singular tracks and characterisation of their morphology.
