Grain refinement in vibration-assisted laser welding of aluminum

Mechanical vibrations affect the nucleation and grain growth conditions during welding. The influence of different vibration conditions on the resulting grain structure in laser beam welding of aluminum is analyzed in this study. Therefore, laser deep penetration welding with different vibration frequencies and amplitudes is investigated and the resulting grain structure is characterized by its grain size and the amount of equiaxed grains. In case of vibration-assisted welding, the amount of equiaxed grains can be significantly increased while the grain size decreases.
