Recrystallization and Texture of Alloy 6014-T4 Automotive sheet

6xxx alloy sheet used for forming automotive outer panels requires a microstructure that will produce a good combination of strength and formability. The present study examined changes in microstructure during recrystallization and heat treatment of alloy 6014 automotive sheet. During solution heat treatment, precipitation and dissolution of Mg2Si impacts recrystallization kinetics and the final grain structure of the sheet. A series of samples was prepared with different textures and grain sizes by manipulating the rolling and heat treatment practices. Texture and grain size of these samples were characterized by optical microscopy, TEM, and EBSD. Measured textures were used as input to the visco-plastic self-consistent (VPSC) model. Tensile results from 3 different test directions were compared to those from actual forming tests.
