Titanium in Transport Technology

Within the framework of the presentation, titanium materials for applications in transport technology are presented.


Shortly after the introduction of the jet engine, titanium has been used in new alloys to meet ever tighter standards. Among others, these standards are high-temperature performance and creep resistance. Last not least static strength and fatigue performance. By means of triple VAR, the highest quality titanium metal alloys can be processed. These special alloys are used in aerospace applications such as engines and airframes.

In jet engines titanium is mainly used for critical jet engine rotating applications. The presentation will focus on such alloys that are used in this field. In airframes titanium alloys replace steels in some scopes of application. For example: landing gears and nacelles. These substitutions enable to save weight and improve aircraft efficiency. With each innovative intelligent design, aircraft manufacturers increase the number of applications of titanium in airframes.


In the automobile industry applicability is being developed for titanium in automotive and motor sports. Engine parts such as connecting rods, valves, valve retainers and springs, rocker arms and camshafts lend themselves to fabrication from titanium. The reasons are obvious: durable, strong, lightweight and heat- and corrosion resistance. Titanium initially may be more expensive for these applications. But suitable designs that exploit its unique characteristics yield parts that more than pay for themselves with an excellent performance.

Application for titanium on production vehicles is also being evaluated for engine parts to improve efficiencies and suspension springs to increase interior space. A complete titanium exhaust system is also being developed to reduce weight and increase the longevity.

All these described developments will lead to a vast spread of titanium in transport technology.
