Prediction of Mechanical Properties of Al-Mg-Si Alloys Based on Microstructural Parameters

Simulation and prediction of material characteristics and behavior play an ever-increasing role in industry and research. In precipitation hardenable alloys, the heat treatment parameters have a decisive influence on the mechanical parameters. In this work the microstructure of 6xxx alloys in terms of different populations of second phase particles was used to calculate the yield strength, fracture strain, and fracture toughness resulting from different artificial ageing times. This was achieved by a combination of thermo-kinetic (CALPHAD) and micromechanical models. The results are compared with experimental data and good agreement is shown.
